At times, moving abroad can feel like its own full-time job. The information you need is scattered, contradictory, and subject to change at any time. Meanwhile, expat influencers make it look effortless; AI oversimplifies; and internet forums tell you what worked for a stranger, in a different situation, several years ago. And immigration attorneys — as valuable as they are — may answer specific questions, but they won't proactively help you organize your life around a move.

FOUNDER'S STORY
Four years, three governments, two passports
Hi, I'm Frances. Growing up in rural Maine, I never imagined I'd live in Europe, let alone help other Americans move here.
I was inspired to start Mirabella after I relocated from New York City to Stockholm, Sweden — a move that took four years from start to finish, thanks to a confluence of ill-advised and incorrect assumptions, intentionally opaque immigration laws, and unfortunate timing (the global pandemic certainly didn't help matters).
After years of living in limbo, a chance encounter with a fellow bridesmaid at my best friend's wedding led me to discover that I was eligible for Italian citizenship by descent. (Thank you, Jess!) That one conversation changed not just my life but the lives of my family members who, like me, are now proud dual US-Italian citizens legally allowed to reside anywhere in the EU. But it shouldn't be that hard; the official channels I relied on simply aren't designed to surface that kind of information, and something this important shouldn't be left to chance. And all my hard-earned knowledge — from navigating foreign bureaucracies and obtaining proper documentation to day-to-day practicalities like preparing your American financial accounts for a cross-border life, what's worth shipping overseas (and what isn't!), and how to keep your US cellphone number operational without paying a small fortune — shouldn't be gate-kept, either.
With Mirabella, I get to provide the support I wish I'd had from the start. And although my journey was incredibly challenging at times, knowing that I can use what I learned to help others makes it all worthwhile.
The Italian word mirabella comes from the medieval Latin mira ("view") + bella ("beautiful") — exactly the energy I hope to bring to others' experiences, now that I'm on the other side of moving abroad. It's also the name of the village where my great-great-grandmother Anna was born, from whom I inherited my Italian citizenship. I couldn't think of a more fitting way to honor her legacy.

Relocation advisors are usually engaged by multinational corporations to assist executives during global placements. They handle everything from the initial visa application to finding housing and coordinating logistics with the moving company. At Mirabella, we aim to bring the same level of care and expertise to American individuals and families who are interested in moving to Europe on their own terms, without an employer or other institution as a sponsor.
Mirabella is currently equipped to assist American passport holders and their families move to Europe, including the United Kingdom. Our clientele frequently already have some degree of location independence, often through entrepreneurship, retirement, or another form of remote work, but it's not a requirement. You don't need to know exactly where you want to move, or even if you want to embark on a move abroad at all — unlike many relocation advisors, Mirabella is uniquely well-positioned to help you understand your options before committing to any big decisions.
While we're always happy to have an initial conversation, we generally encourage Americans who are moving through their job or on a student visa to first seek support from either their employer or educational institution directly, as those organizations will have the most relevant resources and information.
Mirabella offers something most relocation advisors don't: holistic, individualized cross-border guidance spanning the full range of European residency pathways, from more familiar options like the Dutch American Friendship Treaty (DAFT), Portugal's D7 visa, and Irish citizenship by descent to lesser known (arguably underutilized) digital nomad visas, golden visas, and family reunification routes across the EU and UK.
Most advisors specialize in a single country or visa type. If you don't fit their niche, they can't help you. Because Mirabella monitors immigration law across all of Europe, we're able to take an unbiased 360° view of your situation, identifying pathways you might not have considered and flagging complications before they become problems.
Lastly, unlike advisors who focus exclusively on the visa application process, our remit extends to the practical realities of building a life abroad, because we've lived them.
No. Mirabella provides informational and strategic guidance only and does not offer legal, immigration, tax, or financial representation or advice. Additionally, visa eligibility, residency rights, and immigration outcomes are determined solely by the relevant governmental authorities.
Our role is both broader and more hands-on than a lawyer's. An attorney answers specific legal questions within a defined area of law. We help you organize your life before, during, and after the move — sequencing decisions, coordinating the moving parts, and planning around contingencies. Where an attorney might tell you whether you qualify for a visa, we'll help you determine which visa makes sense for your life, how to prepare for the application, and what to do after you get a decision (hopefully positive, but we plan for the negative outcomes, too).
We'll always be transparent about the distinction between what we do and what requires consultation with a licensed professional. When such expertise is required, we'll tell you, and, if desired, we'll gladly make an introduction. Our referral network includes credentialed immigration attorneys, cross-border tax accountants, and financial advisors in both US and European jurisdictions.
Every move presents its own puzzle, and we genuinely enjoy the process of finding the best solution for you. Each engagement is scoped individually, to account for the complexity of your situation, the number of jurisdictions involved, and your ideal timeline.
Our Standard Engagement is designed to help you understand your options, surface potential challenges well in advance, propose viable solutions and alternatives, and ultimately provide you with a clear, actionable path forward, in the form of a custom dossier of three written deliverables — the Residency Brief, outlining your Plan A, Plan B, and Plan C immigration strategies, plus the rigorously researched Pre-Departure Guide and Post-Arrival Guide — each followed by a 60-minute strategy session to discuss findings and align on next steps. Most Standard Engagements are complete within six to eight weeks.
For clients who want more hands-on support, the Full Engagement adds a layer of ongoing coordination and liaising with other service providers to help you actually execute on the plan. If the Standard Engagement gives your move a project manager, the Full Engagement gives it a chief of staff.

No. The vast majority of people move without the assistance of either a relocation advisor or a law firm, and we think that's a good thing.
Mirabella's role is similar to a wedding planner's. Do you need one to get married? Absolutely not. But there will be times when the administrative burden alone feels like its own full-time job and, for some people, that kind of mental load is worth outsourcing. (We happen to find parsing the fine print on immigration bureaus' websites and tracking down long-lost vital records thrilling, but we realize not everyone feels the same.)
And, unlike influencers and AI, we promise to be honest with you about the challenges you can expect to face, and how to handle them if and when they arise.
Yes. Answering that question is part of why Mirabella exists and one of the main reasons why people book a discovery call. You can't possibly make a decision that big without specific, high-quality information — the kind that is inordinately difficult to find — leaving many people wondering for months or even years: Could I really pull this off? What it would take? And what would my life look like, if I tried? Moving abroad doesn't make sense for everyone, but no one should give up on it simply because it was too hard to understand their options. Mirabella is designed to meet you at exactly that stage.
No. We wish we could guarantee otherwise, but the difficult reality is that moving abroad is inevitably going to push you beyond your comfort zone, with surprises both good and bad along the way. Anyone who says otherwise isn't being truthful with you.
But we would argue that friction is integral to what makes the whole endeavor worthwhile. You're on an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime adventure, one that will give you the opportunity to learn a tremendous amount about yourself and the world around you. That is a rare privilege.
